Welcome to Tempe, Arizona.Tempe is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, USA, with a 2005 population estimate of 165,796 according to the mid-decade Census survey. Darrell Duppa is usually credited with suggesting the name, adopted in 1879, after comparing the Salt River valley near a 300-foot-tall butte, to the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece. Duppa also had the honor of giving name to Phoenix, 11 years earlier.
Tempe is a major suburb of Phoenix and is located immediately southeast. The upscale suburb of Scottsdale is immediately to the north of Tempe.

Tempe is the location of the head offices of US Airways (formerly America West Airlines) and the main campus of Arizona State University. It was the longtime host of the Fiesta Bowl, although the BCS game will move to Glendale in 2007. On New Year's Eve, the city hosts the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Block Party, one of the nation's largest New Year's Eve parties. The event typically has a national band heading a concert, along with several other local and national bands. It was also the site of one of the three Presidential debates in 2004 and Super Bowl XXX. It is additionally the spring training host city of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.Tempe Diablo Stadium Complex was founded in 1968 and was renovated in 1993 into its present day configuration. The stadium and all of its facilities overlook Gene Autry Field and the beautiful Wyndham Buttes Resort. Not only is the complex one of the more picturesque facilities, it is one of the most accessible complexes in the Phoenix Metro area.

Take a journey to Tempe Town Lake, one of Arizona's most popular outdoor destinations. More than 2 million people visit Town Lake each year to boat, fish, attend concerts, fireworks and a variety of festivals. It's also one of Tempe's best development sites.
The heart of Tempe Town Lake is historic Tempe Beach Park. Originally built in 1931, this park was completely renovated in 1999 as part of the construction of Town Lake. The park connects to the 5 miles of paths for bicycling, jogging or in-line skating that circle Town Lake. This 25-acre park is Tempe's premier special event space. Nearly every weekend visitors can participate in a 10K run, watch a concert or take part in a community festival. The innovative, $1.3 million Splash Playground lets kids safely get wet in the warmer weather. The historic baseball field is just the right size for youth softball or carnival games. The amphitheater accommodates 5,000 people comfortably for concerts or outdoor trade shows. Rio Lago Cruise Company operates its boat concession from this park.
